Tennessee vs. California
OPENING THOUGHTS
The Vols kicked-off the season tonight here in Knoxville, TN at Neyland Stadium. The game started at 5:30 p.m. EST. It was televised on EPSN, however, I don’t have cable, so I couldn’t watch it, but I did get to listen to the game on WIVK. WIVK always plays the games on the radio. So if you cannot watch the game you at least can listen to it. Tennessee played California.
David Clutcliffe is back to UT as the Offensive Coordinator for the Vols. I hope he will be great for the Vols, because we do need to run the ball more and get some touchdowns. We also need to make sure our defense can handle the offense in each and every game as well.
Tennessee ranked 23 (AP & USA Today) and Cal ranked 9 (AP) & 12 (USA Today) prior to this game.
I plan to write here and there as the game goes on. It is 5:30 p.m. and the ball is kicked off. I am listening to WIVK, since I don’t have cable to watch it on ESPN. It is officially Football Time in Tennessee right now.
FIRST QUARTER
Cal gets the ball first as offense. Cal couldn’t score and had to bunt the ball. Tennessee now has the ball. Tennessee got a flag and it caused us to punt the ball, instead of being able to go for it. This turned the ball over to Cal and the Vols got a flag. Tennessee almost intercepted the ball, but it was ruled incomplete. This time Cal got a flag. This will cause Cal to bunt the ball to Tennessee. Tennessee now tries for a touchdown. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE! Erik Ainge tossed it to Chris Brown. James Wilhoit knocked on the extra point! The score is now TN—7 and Cal—0. Cal got the ball after Tennessee’s touchdown and got a delay of game — a new rule. Cal couldn’t down the ball that much and giving the ball over to Tennessee. Now this is the end of the quarter and TN leads by a score of 7 to 0.
SECOND QUARTER
Tennessee starts off the second quarter with the ball and couldn’t make it anywhere, giving over the ball to Cal. Another penalty on Cal. (False start). The Bears couldn’t do anything, forcing a punt to the Vols. Now the Vols will try to see if they can get anywhere with the ball. Ainge almost threw an interception. Brandon Hampton from Cal intercepted the ball. Tennessee was really close to getting a touchdown too. Now Cal has the ball with the first turnover of the game. Now Tennessee (Antwan Stewart) intercepted the ball from Cal; making this the 2nd turnover of the game. They are doing an instant replay on a call that just happened, where they thought Tennessee was out of bounds, when there weren’t. That was a good call by Phillip Fulmer. I like that new rule they allow now for the college football games. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE! This is the 2nd one for Tennessee tonight! Robert Meachem got the touchdown, Wilhoit got the extra point for us. The score is now TN—14 and Cal—0. Now Cal will try to score, with the couple minutes left of the first half of the game. Cal uses their first time out with a little over 1 minute left in the first half. Cal couldn’t finish to make anything. Tennessee leads the first half by a score of 14 to 0.
HALF TIME
This game has proven so far to be a great game. Cal is a tough team, they were even ranked higher then the Vols preseason stats. I can tell our offense still needs some work. Our defense is still pretty strong. You need both a good offense and defense to make a strong football team. Despite Tennessee winning at half time, it is still anyones game.
THIRD QUARTER
Tennessee started with the ball. Meachem went 80 yrds. for a touchdown! His 2nd touchdown for the night. Wilhoit’s kick was good, but a penalty was called, illegal formation against Tennessee. This calls for a 5 yrd. penalty and a re-kick. Wilhoit retries and bangs it through. Tennessee now leads 21 to 0. This touchdown was within 38 seconds of the 2nd half too! Tennessee kicks it to Cal. Cal couldn’t do anything and threw it over to Tennessee. Ainge tossed it to Jayson Swain and Swain got a Touchdown. Wilhoit gave us the extra point too! Tennessee now leads it 28 to 0. Now Cal has the ball, they couldn’t do anything forcing a punt to Tennessee. Tennessee (Montario Hardesty) scored this touchdown and Wilhoit tacked on the extra point. It is now 35 to 0. Cal has the ball again. Tennessee’s Inquoris Johnson intercepted the ball from Cal. They now put in Jonathan Crompton as QB. Now Tennessee turned over the ball to Cal. Cal almost got a towndown, they over threw it. Cal attempts a field goal for the extra points. This will be a 32 yrd. attempt and it is good. Tennessee still leads 35 to 3. Cal hasn’t been shut out since 1928, they came very close to being shut out in this game. Tennessee now has the ball with Crompton as quarterback. Tennessee couldn’t do anything, forcing them to punt the ball to Cal. Tennessee leads in the 3rd quarter with a score of 38 to 3.
FOURTH QUARTER
Cal starts the 4th quarter with the ball. Cal just scored a touchdown. They are trying for the 2 pt. conversion. Cal takes the 2nd time out of the game, 1st for the 2nd half. Cal completed the 2 pt. conversion. Tennessee still leads 35 to 11. Tennessee had the ball and had to punt it away. Now Cal has the ball. Cal couldn’t go any further and the Vols have the ball back. Colquitt will punt the ball. Crompton gets some more playing time in this quarter. With the second strings playing, Crompton handed the ball to Coker a lot tonight, both are 2nd stringers. Cal is taking a 2nd time out for this half with 27 seconds left of the game. Cal has the ball now. Cal came close to the in-zone. Cal just scored a touchdown. The Cal extra point was good. The end of the game and the score is 35 to 18. TENNESSEE WINS!

FINAL THOUGHTS
106,009 attended this game tonight at Neyland Stadium. I think both the defense and the offense played a great game. It could have been stepped up a bit in the second half, but they let some of the 2nd stringers play some, which is also great, this way they can get some expereince against some “Big, Top Teams.” This was Tennessee’s 12 consecutive win for season openers.
If you are reading this and a Vol fan, you need to look into joining the The Big Orange Army. The BoA is an officially licenses membership organization for support the Vols. They are not associated with the military! They also support and sponsor a lot of charity organizations. You get a bunch of great benefits too! Just show your BoA dog tags and you get it! When you join, you join for LIFE! Show everyone your blood runs “ORANGE.”
The Vols will play Air Force next week (09/09/2006) here in Knoxville, TN at Neyland Stadium. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be airred on PPV. So I will be again listening to the game WIVK (the radio). Our first 4 games are home games.
I am not sure if I can do this every week, but I figured this would be something fun to try to do. Give me feedback y’all!
GO VOLS!
